Video Premiere: ju sei – “ぬけがら”

Posted by on July 1, 2016

For their latest video, set to a track from 2011’s Cone-solo (via Enban),  Japanese duo ju sei (Junichiro Tanaka and sei)  are cast in an endless sunset by Barcelona-born filmmaker Adria Ghiralt. Filmed while in Japan and finished at his current home in Chile, the video was conceptualized as a reflection on Ghiralt’s trips between the two countries — taken with his partner actress Mappo Klampaiboon. Trapped in the sunset, Tanaka and Sei dance for Klampaiboon in order to signify the real times of day. The two duos  encountered each other thanks to one of Tanaka and Sei’s bouncy ju sei et filles live collaborations, and though mostly unable to communicate, began recording the basic parts for the video while still together in Japan. The title, “ぬけがら,” translates as “husk.” Despite that, there’s less melancholy and more conflagration to the song and video, both raucous blendings of new and old forms, though its 11-minute runtime make it a substantial enough one-off.

Cone-solo is available here and you can check out Ghiralt’s other works here. ju sei are reportedly working on a new album, follow sei on Twitter for updates.
