The Garment District – “Nature-Nurture” (Sonic Boom Remix)
Scottish filmmaker Gordon Nelson, raised in Pittsburgh and now resident in Boston, recently applied his craft, to good effect, on behalf of fellow Pittsburgher Jennifer Baron’s project The Garment District. Baron got in touch this week to share his video for Sonic Boom’s remix of her song “Nature-Nurture,” pressed to vinyl last year by La Station Radar; they actually have a handful of copies remaining, available here (Night-People will release her next LP this fall). When we wrote the song up last year, we shared some of her thoughts on the involvement of Sonic Boom (check that post out here) so we’re thrilled to see such a compelling accompaniment to a sentimental favorite. Nelson used found and more extensively manipulated footage “to create this visual journey of a young girl discovering some of the mysteries and beauty of insects, nature, and science,” and though you should steer clear if the thought of young caterpillars more or less “bursting” out from a cluster of eggs unsettles you, it is a perfect accompaniment; the bug transformations and the segments showing the young girl’s documentation becoming a handy metaphor for the very nature of a remix.
