Dwight’s 2014: Last Year, What Year? Just Say Hello

As I wrote in the introduction to yesterday’s label feature, 2014 looked like a good year for labels — we admittedly see and try to treat with a large number, but isn’t that any aspiring capitalist’s ideal vision of shopping? A world of choice, with access to varied experiences. As long as there are small imprints and people to care about them, novelty endures, and 2014 was a year of novelties. My outlook is probably substantially different from 2013’s end though… then I had plenty of complaints to render. I’ve since started working on an eency weency side-project with Liz and formulating some aspects of our approach to noise has evidently been a soothing experience. At the very least something inspirational to me in 2014… having a particularly conscious approach to composition is difficult and seeing first hand the realizations of so many conscious visions is…  “inspiring.” It feels easier to manage to change, and as our work so far mostly trades in field recordings and computer fiddling, nothing could seem more valuable.

In that vein, outside of Decoder and Crash Symbols, one of our favorite sidelines was trying to drum up West Virginia tourism (Tudor’s Biscuit World was, as ever, invaluable in that endeavor. Last summer Dan Goldberg drove the Mountain Show band wagon down into Canaan Valley with us, doing an acoustic set of his own alongside a beautifully gnarly bits from Gregory Paul’s Train Trash project and Rebecca Doerfer, aka Brown Bread (it was her car that constituted the band’s wagon in this case, God bless). They played underneath a bridge by a stream during a summer storm, juxtaposing an incredible range of muzak with the already varied sounds of water and the smell of forest. That night, the entire area was blanketed in a fog of fireflies, more than that I thought still got together to hang out at once. Other out of town folks joined us in Morgantown and hopefully the pay-off for them was comparable, despite the exigencies of cold and student migrations… J. Marinelli and the Elsinores, Sunburned Hand of the Man, the Barrett Avner Community Band, Ma Turner, and others all helped liven the town up with Liz’s band the Furr on various nights. It’s thanks to them we don’t have to come down from the mountains too often (the internet helps too).

Though I’m appending 26 releases to my 2013 picks from last year, bringing the total of that list up to 98 entries, I’m pleased to say my first (sure to be inadequate) pass through the audio offspring of 2014 turned up more than my last, which began with 72 — this time I’m beginning with 93 and next year hopefully I’ll get to tack on more than just 26.

So without further hullabaloo, my 2014 list in alphabetical order, with important omissions that are sure to haunt me (please feel free to point them out). Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to all the readers who might ever chance across Decoder, all the labels and artists that produce and entrust their works to us, anyone we’ve gotten to trade tapes with… and everyone that lives and creates in between. To all you sloppy optimists trying to account for everything and not miss a moment, thanks for making it a whole lot easier on our end. Long live 2015, and Gourdspeed 2014.
