Syko Friend – ‘Angel’s Ride’

Sophie Weil — Los Angeles musician by way of Minneapolis — has channeled somnambulant drifts under the solo guise Syko Friend since 2011. As expected from an occasional contributor to countrified outlets Clay Camero’s County Line Bandits and Itasca, Syko Friend fails to shy away completely from western swing, managing to corral (pun fully intended) country western and experimental music into one surprisingly cohesive pen. Angel’s Ride, Weil’s newest release, and first for her self-made label Dove Cove Records, showcases both impressive songwriting and sound sculpting. The album’s two long tracks, “Cherry Eyes” and “Rachel,” are sirenic — like the bleaker passages in a Louise Erdrich book. Weil’s alluring voice and spindly guitar provide most of the sounds, and the shamanic symbiosis is fully actualized. You’d be hard-pressed to find an equally haunting track pairing, especially with such a minimal set up. There’s a ghost hidden on Angel’s Ride, buried in prairie grass, and when the wind blows through, you can hear its sighing story.
