Following on their 2xLPOriginal Soundtrack and a busy year in between, Austin-based trio Dallas Acid have a new album out later this month titled Spa Hunter. Fleshed out while “watching vintage BMW commercials,” Spa Hunter is both a cosmic head-trip and a series of more and less subtle comments on the idealization of “wealth as success” that continues fueling Trumpism in America — specifically, they were inspired by the conflation of wealth with salvation and enlightenment. However radical or not, the ideas are novel foregrounding, particularly in light of the band’s minimalist, kosmische reimagining of 80s synth machismo, replacing heavy swagger with poised mechanics. Ultimately their description, “Stockhausen inspired pop,” feels fair. “29 Palms” is on the more subtle side, an airy maybe-homage to the small city of the same name just north of Joshua Tree National Park pulled from Spa Hunter‘s headier core tracks.

Spa Hunter is available to preorder on vinyl via Flying Moonlight, with a tape edition due to arrive via Burger Records.
