Billington / Shippy / Wyche – ‘S/T’

Posted by on October 20, 2017

Recorded at one of Chicago’s premiere arts programming spaces, Elastic Arts, Billington / Shippy / Wyche shows off some serious chemistry between three contemporary mainstays of Windy City experimental music. As befits a city with such a strong lineage of noise rock and free jazz, the trio — Ben Baker Billington on drums, Daniel Wyche on guitar, Mark Shippy on guitar — grapple with wails, polyrhythms, and feedback on the three pieces that comprise their self-titled debut. The two track tornado a-side is like a balls to the wall freakout from the second Billington’s sticks start dancing across his percussive rig on “Kater’s Maroon Mini.” Then the science fiction guitars come in, leaving the listener somewhere between Acid Mother’s Temple and Ornette Coleman. The b-side, although by no means void of psychedelic meltdown, is a long-form jammer titled “Norvin’s Fandled Submersible,” occasionally droning, even. It rounds out the collection — the track’s onset providing a welcome oasis between the end of the a-side and the gradual, revelatory crescendo slouching this way in T-25 minutes.

Billington / Shippy / Wyche is out now on Astral Spirits.
