While Dubuque-based Randy Carter, aka ARU, readies himself for a bout of touring next season (“Mountains of Dub Tourette 2017”), I’m catching up with his new More Songs About Dubbing CD for Denver’s Forbidden Place Records. Conceived as a dubbed out companion to Carter’s epic Black Saturn collaboration Saturated, on More Songs he collects eleven variously squiggly or pounding dub edits — reworked using isolated beat and vocal tracks from the original collaboration. Like ARU in general, the result is all over the place, but fun and somehow coherent thanks to some careful arrangement and editing from Carter. Featuring contributions from Black Saturn himself and fellow Iowa staple Bob Bucko Jr., More Songs never wears out its welcome. If you want to hear more, catch ARU live while he strings himself out across Iowa…
