The Discreet Charm of the Ghostmodern World is an album of clockwork ghouls and polite ghosts, conjured by Japanese sound artist Masaki Kubo — his seventh album as former_airline. The tone is engrossing, made even more hypnotic thanks to meticulously stacked loops and synth sequences. As an album though, The Discreet Charm is haunted but vibrant, synthetic but sounding caught between postmodern impressions of the natural and the spiritual world. Appropriately or not, my mind leaps to the weird gray area of amusement parks or haunted house horrors, particularly the hidden craftsmanship and folklore associated with them. Like the most enduring novelties, The Discreet Charm is a wonderfully well calibrated “experience.” In that sense at least, as a sound artist, Kubo seems undeniably well acquainted with the expectations and limitations of his craft!
