My excitement over a new Kyle Landstra release was briefly threatened by my mollycoddled millennial attention span: “four fucking tapes? Who does he think he is, La Monte Young?” It seems Mr. Landstra simply thinks he may be the reincarnation of Robert Moog and Hans-Joachim Roedelius, the spiritual lovechild of Terry Riley and Vangelis—if so, he may very well be correct. The first tape of this four-volume epic, to which I must restrict my focus, is utterly transcendental. Landstra transcends the sci-fi kitsch of synthesizer obsession to produce something both hauntingly prophetic and intensely personal; if an analogue-driven apocalypse were to tear down every shred of digital modernity we hold dear, Unshared Properties would be a front-runner for the equivalent of the Book of Revelations.

Conveniently, this first volume displays contrasts that encapsulate the breadth of Landstra’s talents. “Formless Elation” delivers the, uh, formless ambient drones it promises, immersing our ears into a swirling bath of space-age minimalism. But later on, “Trailing Luminosity” shimmers in an arpeggiating kaleidoscope of synesthesia-inducing magic that would make Philip Glass more insecure than yours truly during puberty. As for the other three volumes, I’m still working my way through them, so it’s a journey we’ll all get to embark on together. Thank you, maestro!
