Arszyn / Duda – ‘Automata’

Posted by on March 11, 2015

In 2013, Polish electroacoustic duo Krzysztof Topolski and Tomasz Duda were invited by the famed EMS studio in Stockholm to take on a residency there. It was during this time that the source material for the ecstasy-filled Automata cassette — which arrived courtesy of the Warsaw-based Pawlacz Perski imprint — was laid to tape. Topolski, or Arszyn, is a drummer and electroacoustic composer; Duda is a saxophonist who excels in an improvisatory setting. With a synergistic glee, the two – who for these initial sessions were joined by Per-Åke Holmlander (tuba) and Johannes Bergmark (platform for amplified objects) — craft high-energy vortices that seem both to spin out of control and to cascade in on themselves. After the initial EMS work, Topolski and Duda returned to Poland to augment the base recordings with piano, Wurlitzer, and vocal overdubs from Joanna Duda, and a slithery oboe session by Gosia Kęsicka. The resulting seven concoctions are frantic and free, outpourings of sound that never seem to rest in the same sonic space for very long.

Fans of free jazz, outrageously clever electronics, or sheer whimsy should snatch up a copy of this tape directly from the label’s Bandcamp as soon as possible. There are only five of these beauties left as of now.
