Algiers – “But She Was Not Flying”
This morning, Matador Records announced their signing of ALGIERS, and premiered a new track from their forthcoming, self-titled debut. “But She Was Not Flying” showcases new territory for the intense, spiritual ensemble, as the group add slick piano breaks that slice the tension of the vocal-driven, noisy rhythms of the track. The power of Algiers emanates from several sources, including Franklin James Fisher’s focused lead vocal, which adds an organic feeling to the alien rhythm & blues produced by the group’s programmed beats and instrumentation. “But She Was Not Flying” is a perfect teaser for the album, for it matches the themes of the full set and hints at the radical drama of the band’s work. Yet, that piano sparkles with a brightness that moves beyond Algiers’ charged imagery, signaling a sense of redemption inherent to that drama.
