Premiere: Gabriel Garzón-Montano – “Pour Maman (Patrick Russell Dub)”

In a sea of fledgling artists peddling their take on “eccentric” and “soulful” electronic R&B – and trust me, not a day goes by that my inbox isn’t flooded with a dozen new messages of the like – Gabriel Garzón-Montano’s 2014 EP Bishouné: Alma del Huila on Styles Upon Styles was a godsend, an album of sincerity and experimentation rife with color and vibrancy. Rhythms evolve naturally in an organic state, naturally evolving from Garzón-Montano’s understated but bountiful character. The label now releases a “deluxe” edition of Bishouné, expanded with remixes by the likes of Gut Nose, Lord raja, Baebro, Brendon Moeller, Archie Pelago, and Patrick Russell, a motley assortment of heavy hitters in the field. Premiered below is Patrick Russell’s “dub” version of “Pour Maman,” one of the more moving tunes from the original album. Russell, who is also a part of the Interdimensional Transmissions crew in Detroit with BMG and Erika and is a resident DJ of The Bunker in NYC, spreads out the original tune’s agile movements, smearing each rhythmic turn into a chordal throb and vaporous wave of static. Subtle shifts of sub-bass and distant tones slither their way through space in a seductive slur of glitched minimalism. It’s an astounding retake on an already expansive track. Pick up the expanded edition (on CD or as a digital download with the EP) of Bishouné directly via Styles Upon Styles’ site.
