Once again, here’s a case of an album I received for review that has ended up serenading me to sleep every night. Minimalist superstar Duane Pitre has been known for participating in more challenging works, such as his exotic solo album Feel Free. Teaming up with the Texan musical MacGuyver Cory Allen appears more of an effort to draw out some soft, meditative, intuitively beautiful textures. The pair combine a dazzling array of instruments: bowed guitar, piano, harmonium, and a never-before-heard 49-string drone-harp designed by Allen. As the title might suggest, there does seem to be a suggested transition from an inquisitive, wandering mood to a blissful, calm resolution. Students of Decay never fails to deliver incredible work like this, sounds that knock you off your feet a full twenty minutes after your body has absorbed them. The kind feeling you’d expect to get if a church organ could slow down time and drown you in molasses-thick resonance. Sit back and soak it all in. The Seeker and the Healer is available now via Students of Decay.
